1-year-old needing a liver transplant draws support from Detroit Lions

A 1-year-old battling for his life has captured the attention of a member of the Detroit Lions.

Lions standout Aidan Hutchinson shared the family’s plea on his Instagram stories.

DETROIT (FOX 2) – A young boy from South Lyon is facing the biggest fight of his life as he awaits a liver transplant, and his family’s message has already reached Ford Field.

One-year-old Isaac Calkins, who adores cuddles and affection, has had a tough eight months, says his mom, Carrie. Isaac has ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency, or OTC deficiency, a condition where his liver cannot process ammonia properly.

Doctors diagnosed it early, and the family has spent much time at Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor.

“They managed it with medication, and he received a lifesaving liver transplant at just four months old. He did great at first, but he’s had several rejection episodes,” Carrie explained.

She said doctors reassessed him in July. He was on the deceased donor list but was relisted on Oct. 3 in need of a new donor.

“This time we’re hoping for a living liver donor. That’s what will save his life,” Carrie said.

Carrie explained that living liver donors can be between 21 and 55 years old and in good health. The family is now spreading awareness.

Her 8-year-old son, Logan, reached out to Lions star Aidan Hutchinson, who amplified their message on Instagram. Carrie said she was deeply thankful.

“I just want to see him grow up healthy, happy, and able to enjoy a normal childhood,” she said.

The family has launched “Isaac OTC Warrior” pages on social media, hoping someone steps forward to offer the ultimate gift.

“I trust that God has a plan for him. The right liver is out there, and he’s such a strong boy. We just need help,” she said..

Carrie added that it’s remarkable how a donor’s liver can regenerate within a few months.
