The Pittsburgh Steelers, Detroit Lions, and Las Vegas Raiders are all expected to explore the running back market in free agency as they search for a reliable No. 2 option behind their starters.

Pittsburgh previously relied on a strong tandem in the backfield, but roster changes and contract situations could force the team to add another complementary runner. Las Vegas faces a similar issue, with uncertainty surrounding its depth chart behind Ashton Jeanty.

In Detroit, the situation became clearer after the Lions moved on from David Montgomery, leaving Jahmyr Gibbs in need of a power-running partner.

One player who could draw interest from all three teams is James Conner of the Arizona Cardinals. Conner is expected to be released this offseason as he enters the final year of a $19 million contract.

The veteran running back missed most of last season due to a serious ankle injury, appearing in only three games. Despite durability concerns, Conner has proven productive when healthy, recording more than 1,000 rushing yards in each of the two seasons prior to 2025.

At age 31, Conner is best suited for an RB2 role that limits his workload while maximizing his physical running style. That makes him an attractive option for teams seeking a short-yardage and goal-line specialist.

Detroit appears to be the strongest fit. Conner’s downhill, power-based approach would balance Gibbs’ speed and playmaking ability, giving the Lions a dependable short-yardage weapon and preserving their star runner over a full season.

Las Vegas also stands out as a strong landing spot. Conner could provide stability behind Jeanty while serving as a veteran mentor for the young back entering his second NFL season.

With multiple teams needing backfield depth and Conner likely available at a reduced cost, the Raiders, Lions, and Steelers are expected to monitor his status closely once free agency opens.
