3 Defensive Ends the Lions Could Sign to Boost Their Pass Rush

Examining three EDGE defenders the Lions could target in free agency.

The Detroit Lions enter the 2026 NFL offseason with a clear priority: improving their pass rush opposite Pro Bowl EDGE rusher Aidan Hutchinson.

Hutchinson remains the driving force of Detroit’s pressure package, but the Lions lacked consistent production from the other side of the defensive line. Adding a proven EDGE defender in free agency could take Aaron Glenn’s defense to the next level.

With that in mind, here are three affordable defensive ends the Detroit Lions could pursue this offseason.

Seahawks EDGE Boye Mafe

Boye Mafe quietly delivered a productive season as part of Seattle’s EDGE rotation. He recorded 40 pressures and two sacks during the regular season, adding two more pressures in the Seahawks’ Super Bowl win over the Patriots.

What makes Mafe appealing for Detroit is his versatility. He isn’t just a situational pass rusher — he also grades well as a run defender, which should catch the attention of general manager Brad Holmes.

The 27-year-old earned a 69.2 Pro Football Focus grade in 2025, ranking 46th among qualified EDGE defenders. According to Spotrac, Mafe is projected to command a contract worth roughly $8 million per season.

That price point would make him a cost-effective addition to the Lions’ defensive front.

Bills EDGE Joey Bosa

Joey Bosa may no longer be the elite double-digit sack producer he once was, but he remains a disruptive defender.

In 2025, Bosa totaled 47 pressures, five sacks, and an NFL-leading five forced fumbles, proving he can still impact games at a high level. He also earned a 79.3 PFF grade, ranking 17th among qualified EDGE rushers.

At nearly 31 years old, Bosa appears motivated by one goal: winning a Super Bowl. Detroit could provide that opportunity with the right offseason moves.

Spotrac projects Bosa to earn around $13.7 million per year, potentially on a short-term “prove-it” deal. A one-year contract would limit risk for Detroit while pairing Bosa with Hutchinson to form a dangerous pass-rushing duo.

Even as a short-term solution, Bosa could make an immediate impact.

EDGE Al-Quadin Muhammad

Al-Quadin Muhammad proved to be a reliable rotational pass rusher for the Lions in 2025.

He posted career highs with 12 sacks and 53 pressures, along with a 74.3 PFF grade (30th-best among all EDGE defenders).

Following his breakout season, Muhammad is expected to receive a raise from his $1.43 million salary. Spotrac projects his market value at approximately $7.9 million per year.

While that represents a significant increase, it remains affordable for Detroit, especially on a short-term deal. Re-signing the soon-to-be 31-year-old on a two-year contract worth roughly $8 million annually would provide continuity and stability opposite Hutchinson.

Final Takeaway

The Lions don’t need to overspend to upgrade their pass rush. Whether targeting Boye Mafe’s versatility, Joey Bosa’s proven production, or Al-Quadin Muhammad’s familiarity with the system, Detroit has multiple affordable options to improve its EDGE rotation this offseason.
