Dan Campbell Can’t Remember His First NFL TD — and His Response Is Comedy Gold

It’s been 25 years since Dan Campbell scored his first NFL touchdown, but based on his reaction this week, you’d think he barely remembers it ever happened.

The play came in Week 5 of the 2000 season, when Campbell was a young tight end for the New York Giants, catching passes from Kerry Collins. It was his very first time reaching the end zone as a pro. But when reporters recently brought it up, Campbell just laughed.

> “Man, no. I haven’t even thought about that,” he said with a grin. “I can’t even remember what it was. I know it was from Kerry, but I don’t remember if it was a flat or in the back of the end zone. Definitely not a go route. That’s crazy — that was a long time ago.”

Then he added a classic Dan Campbell line:

> “I was lucky to have the teammates I did. If Kerry threw it, I didn’t have a choice but to catch it — it caught me.”

That mix of humor and humility is exactly why Lions fans adore him. Whether he’s breaking down game tape, preaching toughness, or poking fun at his own career, Campbell is always unapologetically himself.

And honestly, that’s what makes him one of the most relatable coaches in the league — a former player who still remembers his roots, even if he doesn’t quite remember his first touchdown.
