Lions Should Target Former Pro Bowl Free Agent to Strengthen Cornerback Depth This Month
Following Monday’s announcement that starting cornerback Terrion Arnold will be sidelined for an extended stretch, it’s clear the Detroit Lions must reinforce their secondary. The current healthy group — Rock Ya-Sin, Tre Flowers, Amik Robertson, and Avonte Maddox — lacks the depth, talent, and experience needed to keep Detroit’s defense steady. Although DJ Reed’s eventual return will help, the team needs an immediate solution.
One possible move is pursuing a trade before the November 4 deadline. General manager Brad Holmes could look to acquire a cornerback to bolster the roster. Alternatively, the Lions could explore free agency, where there are still some viable veteran options. Players such as Kendall Fuller, James Bradberry, and Asante Samuel Jr. could be considered, but the most appealing target may be five-time Pro Bowler Stephon Gilmore.
Stephon Gilmore Could Be the Perfect Fit for Detroit
Though no longer the elite shutdown corner he was in his prime with the New England Patriots, the former Defensive Player of the Year remains steady and effective. Over the past five seasons — spent with five different teams — Gilmore has continued to make an impact, starting 48 games in the last three years.
Last season with the Minnesota Vikings, the 35-year-old started 15 games (including two versus Detroit), logging 87% of defensive snaps. He recorded eight pass breakups, one interception, and allowed a 100.6 passer rating in coverage, earning a 63.9 defensive grade from Pro Football Focus — his lowest in four years but still better than the current play of Lions corners Amik Robertson and Terrion Arnold.
Gilmore has been chasing another Super Bowl ring since his days in New England, coming up short with Indianapolis, Dallas, and Minnesota. Joining the Lions would give him one of his best opportunities yet to compete for a championship. As the top free-agent cornerback available, a union between Detroit and Gilmore could truly be a perfect match.
