The Detroit Lions got some welcome news on Tuesday regarding rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, a second medical opinion revealed that Arnold’s shoulder injury isn’t season-ending, and he might only need about a month to heal.
With that update, Detroit may not feel as much pressure to bring in another cornerback. However, if Arnold ends up on injured reserve, adding depth at the position could still be necessary. The Lions are already dealing with injuries to Ennis Rakestraw, D.J. Reed, and Khalil Dorsey, which leaves the secondary thin.
Sports Illustrated’s Emmett Matasovsky recently suggested seven possible free-agent cornerbacks the Lions could pursue, including former Detroit defender Jerry Jacobs. Matasovsky pointed out that Jacobs is familiar with the team’s system, having played for the Lions during the first three seasons under Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell.
Jacobs started 12 games for Detroit during their 2023 NFC Championship run, recording three interceptions. But after losing his starting job late that season, he saw limited playing time and hasn’t played in an NFL game since. He spent 2024 out of football, though he did work out with the Cowboys and Colts this past summer while staying in shape.
If Arnold returns by late October as expected, the Lions wouldn’t need to rush to sign a new starter. Still, Jacobs could make sense as a depth option — he’s experienced, knows the system, and has started 29 games in his career, all with Detroit. In 2023, he tallied 55 tackles, eight pass breakups, and three interceptions in 15 games.
Matasovsky also mentioned other possible targets, including former Lion C.J. Gardner-Johnson, but he signed with the Baltimore Ravens on Tuesday. Additional candidates included DiCaprio Bootle, Cameron Dantzler, Melvin Smith Jr., Fabian Moreau, and Tre Hawkins.
