If you’ve ever watched an NFL game and noticed those flashy Pro Football Focus (PFF) grades appear beside players’ names, you’re not the only one—and neither are the players who roll their eyes at them.
This week, the debate over PFF’s grading criteria has reached new levels, as multiple Detroit Lions players sounded off against the analytics site for what they believe are inaccurate and uninformed evaluations.
Lions Speak Out: “They Don’t Even Know Our Defense”
Inside Detroit’s locker room, the irritation with PFF seems nearly unanimous. Cornerback Terrion Arnold didn’t mince words, insisting he’ll never take the grading system seriously because “they don’t even know what plays are being called.”
“I stopped paying attention after they said I was in man when I was really in Cover 2,” Arnold said, per Lions OnSI. “They have no idea about the scheme. Then there was another time they blamed me for a touchdown — but I wasn’t even covering that guy. They just look at who’s closest to the ball.”
Amik Robertson shared the same frustration, saying he completely tuned PFF out after his second year in the league.
“PFF is full of people who never played football. They don’t know our defense,” Robertson said. “Rankings don’t mean anything. The film doesn’t lie.”
Linebacker Grant Stuard offered a calmer perspective, saying he only glances at PFF for snap counts.
“I get why fans check it,” Stuard admitted. “But they don’t understand what we’re actually running. Only we do.”
Whether you love PFF or question it, one thing’s clear: players believe the grades miss the bigger picture. Schemes, responsibilities, and film breakdowns matter far more than a public score—and for Detroit’s defenders, that’s what truly defines how they perform.
