Ex Detroit Matthew Stafford had royal-level reaction after breaking NFL record

Step aside, Sir Robin of Oxley — make way for Sir Matthew Stafford of Wembley. Sounds funny? Maybe not, considering he just shattered an NFL passing record overseas with five touchdown throws in a single game. Even more impressive, he accomplished it without star receiver Puka Nacua. The local press was so thrilled that one reporter half-jokingly suggested knighthood for the 37-year-old veteran.

In the most endearing and humorous fashion possible, the 17-year pro channeled his inner child with a priceless response — asking the very question anyone in his shoes would naturally wonder:

“Do I get a sword or something?”

Without missing a beat or showing an ounce of hesitation, Stafford was locked in from the start. He came ready to carve up the Jacksonville Jaguars through the air and, after the game, ready for his honorary royal treatment.

Not many NFL players win over international crowds this way. England, like much of Europe, lives and breathes soccer — or “football,” as they call it. Yet the appreciation was clear. Fans respect greatness in any sport, and tossing five touchdowns in one game is a record worthy of global applause.

Matthew Stafford’s Week 7 outing earned truly regal admiration

This was one the Rams absolutely needed. A 5-2 record entering the Week 8 bye is far better than sitting at 4-3. Facing a tough Jaguars defense without Nacua, head coach Sean McVay once again leaned on his veteran signal-caller to create magic.

And the ex-Georgia Bulldog didn’t disappoint:

Just as the U.S. once embraced Brazilian soccer icon Pelé, the former No. 1 overall pick returned the favor in kind. His record-setting showcase served as a perfect pitch for the NFL’s international ambitions.

The five-touchdown spectacle erased any doubts about lingering back issues — leaving just one lingering question: Did he ever get that sword?
