The Detroit Lions have finally taken care of business with star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson. The potential Defensive Player of the Year candidate is now secured long-term on a four-year, $180 million contract.
Hutchinson was one of several core players the Lions needed to lock up. Jameson Williams already landed a three-year, $83 million extension earlier in the year, and Hutchinson was the clear next priority for general manager Brad Holmes. Now, the next player Detroit should focus on extending is standout safety Brian Branch.
Branch, one of the top safeties in the league whose only flaw may be his tendency to jaw back at opponents, should be in line for a contract similar to what Baltimore Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton received this offseason — roughly four years and $100 million.
Branch stands out as the most logical next extension target for the Lions. Although he’s had minor disciplinary run-ins, his play on the field has been stellar. Despite the team battling injuries, Branch has been one of Detroit’s most reliable defenders, showing elite tackling and coverage. He hasn’t recorded a takeaway yet, but he seems to get closer every week.
While Hutchinson’s massive deal sets a high bar, it’s uncertain how much Detroit will be comfortable offering Branch. The team also needs to consider upcoming extensions for Jack Campbell and Jahmyr Gibbs, both of whom are expected to command large contracts — Campbell as the leading tackler and Gibbs as an emerging star rusher in 2025.
Branch remains invaluable to Detroit’s success. At only 24 years old, the Lions have a golden opportunity to secure one of their defensive leaders and locker room cornerstones while he’s entering his best years — and it still feels like his peak is yet to come.
