Dan Campbell explains the reasoning behind the Lions’ inactivity at the trade deadline

Detroit’s head coach, Dan Campbell, spoke with reporters after the team chose not to participate in any trades leading up to the 2025 NFL deadline.

The Lions explored several trade possibilities before the deadline, particularly in light of the gap created on the offensive line after left guard Christian Mahogany’s injury. However, none of the potential moves met all of the organization’s criteria, leading the team to ultimately stand pat.

Head coach Dan Campbell noted that while there were intriguing options on the table, the asking prices — whether in draft picks, salary, or overall value — didn’t make sense for Detroit’s long-term plan. “There were some deals that caught our attention, but in the end, they just didn’t measure up,” he explained.

Campbell reiterated that the franchise remains committed to its foundational approach: building through the draft, developing young players, and retaining core talent, rather than chasing high-profile trades. He expressed confidence in the current roster, saying the team already has the right pieces in place — playmakers, depth, and a capable quarterback to lead the way.

Instead of bringing in a trade acquisition, the Lions bolstered their depth by adding experienced offensive linemen Netane Muti and Chris Hubbard, along with rookie Jack Conley, to the practice squad. They also plan to rely on internal contributors such as Kayode Awosika and Trystan Colon, who the coaching staff believes can handle increased roles if needed.

Campbell made it clear that the organization isn’t interested in making short-sighted moves or overpaying for temporary solutions. Every potential addition was carefully evaluated, and anything that didn’t make both financial and strategic sense was ruled out.
