Video Reveals Amon-Ra St. Brown Threw Punch at Daron Payne Prior to Ejection Incident

A newly surfaced video appears to add context to the altercation that led to Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne’s ejection and suspension during Sunday’s matchup with the Lions.

Payne was tossed from the game and handed a one-game suspension after throwing a punch at Detroit wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown following a Lions touchdown. He appealed the decision, but the NFL upheld the penalty.

Afterward, Washington’s Javon Kinlaw claimed that St. Brown actually initiated the conflict, alleging that officials saw the receiver land a punch on Payne a few plays earlier but chose not to penalize him. When Payne later retaliated, he was the only player punished.

Those claims now seem to have backing. NBC Sports’s JP Finlay shared a clip showing St. Brown taking a swing at Payne during an earlier sequence. While referees stepped in to separate the two, no flag was thrown.

Initially, Payne’s punch appeared spontaneous and unprovoked, but the new footage suggests there had been an escalating exchange between the two players. Despite the revelation, Payne’s suspension remains in place, meaning he’ll still have to sit out Washington’s upcoming game against the Dolphins.
