Commanders Take a Page from Lions’ Playbook After Week 10 Blowout

After watching their team get dismantled by the Detroit Lions in Week 10, the Washington Commanders are now trying to emulate Detroit’s latest coaching move.

Following several disappointing offensive outings, Lions head coach Dan Campbell made a bold change before last week’s game, taking over the offensive play-calling himself. The decision immediately paid off, as Detroit rolled past Washington with a dominant 44-22 victory, racking up 546 total yards in the process.

Running back Jahmyr Gibbs led the charge, rushing for 142 yards and two touchdowns on just 15 carries, while also catching three passes for 30 yards and another score. Quarterback Jared Goff was nearly flawless, completing 25 of 33 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns without taking a single sack.

Detroit’s efficiency stood out as well, converting 50% of their third downs (5-of-10) and going a perfect 2-for-2 on fourth down.

The Commanders, meanwhile, were left reeling. Head coach Dan Quinn and fans alike were frustrated with the defensive collapse, and on Monday, Quinn announced he would take over defensive play-calling duties from coordinator Joe Whitt Jr., according to David Aldridge of The Athletic.

This mirrors Campbell’s recent move, as Quinn hopes a leadership shift on the headset might spark a turnaround. Commanders fans didn’t seem shocked by the decision—many have been calling for change after weeks of poor defensive performances.

However, Quinn faces a tougher task than Campbell. The Lions’ offense boasts a talented roster full of playmakers, while Washington’s defense lacks the same level of proven talent.

I n their last four games, the Commanders have surrendered an average of 33.7 points per game, including last week’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks, where Sam Darnold carved them up for 330 passing yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. Seattle also converted 7-of-11 third downs, exposing holes across the Washington secondary.

Things didn’t improve against Detroit. Goff was in complete control from start to finish, picking apart the defense with ease as Washington failed to record a single sack.

Now, the Lions will carry their offensive momentum into a primetime showdown against the Philadelphia Eagles, while the Commanders hope that Quinn’s direct oversight can breathe new life into a struggling unit ahead of their upcoming playoff rematch with Detroit.
