Detroit’s Upcoming Matchup With the Giants Just Became More Challenging

The Detroit Lions are coming off a frustrating outing against the Philadelphia Eagles on November 16, a game in which they never found their rhythm and ultimately fell 16–9. Detroit’s offense, in particular, struggled badly, failing on all five of its fourth-down attempts.

But that loss is now in the rearview mirror, and the team has shifted its focus to its next challenge: a home game at Ford Field against the 2–9 New York Giants on Sunday, November 23. On paper, it’s a game the Lions should win, given where the Giants are in their rebuild. Still, a loss here would carry much more weight than a win, so Detroit can’t afford to slip.

The Lions remain a highly talented roster with real postseason potential, but they’ll need disciplined decision-making from head coach Dan Campbell to keep that path alive. And despite New York’s poor record, Detroit shouldn’t let that deceive them — the Giants are getting an important player back just in time for this matchup.

According to Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com, rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart is expected to return against Detroit after missing Week 11 due to a concussion. His presence alone raises the level of difficulty for the Lions’ defense. In his appearances this season, Dart has completed 62.7% of his throws for 1,417 yards, 10 touchdowns, and three interceptions, while also adding 317 rushing yards and seven scores on the ground, per NFL Research.

Stapleton reported that Dart would practice on Wednesday as he progresses through the final phase of the concussion protocol. If everything goes smoothly, he will meet with the independent neurologist assigned to the team for final clearance before the weekend.

Stapleton later confirmed the update on X, writing that Dart would return to practice and is expected to have a real shot at playing Sunday in Detroit.

A Silver Lining for Detroit

Dart’s return certainly makes things more challenging for the Lions, but the bright side is that Detroit’s defense wasn’t the issue against Philadelphia — the unit actually held up well. That means Aidan Hutchinson and the rest of the defensive front should be prepared for the dual-threat rookie.

On the flip side, the Giants will be missing one of their promising young offensive pieces. Rookie running back Cam Skattebo, who was injured during their October 26 matchup with the Eagles, will remain sidelined. His absence leaves New York shorthanded, which could help Detroit control the game.

Regardless of who suits up for the Giants, this matchup is a must-win for the Lions. After the disappointment in Philadelphia, Detroit needs to bounce back quickly to keep its playoff ambitions intact.
