The Detroit Lions may finally be getting some reinforcements in the secondary. Cornerback D.J. Reed, who has been sidelined since Week 4, appears to be trending toward a return for Sunday’s matchup with the New York Giants.
Head coach Dan Campbell said he’s encouraged by Reed’s progress but wants to see how he responds over the next couple days.
“I’m optimistic, but a lot will depend on how he looks in the full-speed sessions on Thursday and Friday,” Campbell explained. “He was moving well last week, so we’ll find out.”
Reed has been recovering from a hamstring injury suffered against the Browns, one that initially looked severe but fortunately didn’t require surgery. He resumed practice last week and expressed confidence that he’s already prepared to jump back into game action.
“I always feel ready,” Reed said. “That’s just who I am. The coaches will make the call, but if you ask me, I’m good to go.”
Detroit’s cornerback group could soon be at full strength, especially with rookie Terrion Arnold making headway in the concussion protocol. In the meantime, reserves Rock Ya-Sin and Amik Robertson have performed impressively, and Campbell emphasized that their contributions won’t be forgotten once everyone is healthy.
“Rock has played really well, and Amik has been outstanding,” Campbell said. “Those performances matter. Even if Reed and Arnold are back, Amik’s not going to disappear from the rotation. We’ll find ways to use all of them.”
Arnold’s availability for this weekend is still uncertain. Although the Lions only issued an estimated practice report on Wednesday, he would have been listed as a non-participant as he continues to recover from the concussion he sustained in Week 10 against Washington.
“Arnold is still day-to-day,” Campbell noted. “We’ll just have to monitor him.”
Safety Brian Branch, who was also projected as a non-participant on Wednesday, seems to be in a better spot. Campbell didn’t sound concerned about Branch’s readiness for Sunday.
“I feel alright about Branch,” he said. “I think he’ll be fine. I’m much more confident there.”
