Amon-Ra St. Brown clears up the real story behind Jameson Williams’ TD celebration penalty

Amon-Ra St. Brown recently shared a surprising detail about Jameson Williams’ latest touchdown-celebration penalty—one that contradicts the assumption most people made about what happened.

During the Detroit Lions’ Week 11 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, the offense had been stagnant and desperately needed a spark. That came when Jared Goff hit Jameson Williams for a 40-yard score, finally putting Detroit on the board.

But the momentum evaporated almost instantly. Williams wrapped his arms around the goal post as part of his celebration, which earned him a 15-yard flag. The added yardage turned the routine extra point into a 48-yard kick on a windy night, and Jake Bates pushed it wide. Instead of taking the lead, the Lions stayed behind—and the Eagles responded with a touchdown before halftime, never losing control again. That one missed point arguably changed how both teams approached the rest of the game.

Williams has taken plenty of heat for the penalty. Mike Valenti from 97.1 The Ticket even went as far as calling him “an idiot” and telling him to “grow up.”

On the latest episode of the St. Brown Podcast, Amon-Ra and his brother Equanimeous broke down what happened. Equanimeous brought up the incident first and jokingly nudged his brother about being a veteran presence in the receiver room.

When he saw Williams hug the goal post, he said his reaction was basically, “What is he doing? Do players not know the NFL’s rules on this stuff?”

Amon-Ra then shared something that was both unexpected and a little concerning. Williams had already been fined three times last season—over $59,000 total—for crossing the line with touchdown celebrations. And yet…

(—the implication being that Williams still didn’t seem to fully understand, or wasn’t aware of, the specific rule he violated.)
