Detroit’s Jameson Williams Shares Unexpected Admission

Detroit Lions receiver Jameson Williams acknowledged after Thursday’s practice that he didn’t realize jumping into the goalpost could draw a penalty.

“I honestly had no idea it was something officials could flag,” Williams said. “I didn’t realize until I sat down and saw the field-goal unit running out there. I told Jake (Bates), Jack (Fox), and the coaches that I was sorry. They told me it wasn’t on me, but in that moment it definitely felt like it was. We just have to make plays and be smarter.”

The former first-round selection said he now understands he must pay closer attention to his celebrations so he doesn’t end up hurting the team with avoidable mistakes.

“Do you think that’s something I’m doing all the time?” Williams added with a laugh. “I think that’s the only time I’ve done it this season. It’s something I can control, and I’m moving on from it. New week, new game, nothing else to it.”

Special teams coordinator Dave Fipp mentioned that he saw head coach Dan Campbell talking with Williams as he came to the sideline, so he didn’t feel the need to address it himself.

“Honestly, once I saw Dan speaking with him, I knew it was handled,” Fipp said. “From our perspective, it doesn’t matter where the ball ends up. The call is ‘field goal,’ and we line up and kick. Whether it’s a 48-yarder or a 33-yarder, the job stays the same. I don’t dwell on the ‘I can’t believe that happened’ moments. If we make the kick, it’s a non-issue. We didn’t convert, and that’s what really hurt.”

Fipp also noted that the late 54-yard attempt was a huge moment, especially given the direction and environment at that point in the game, and praised Bates for stepping into that situation.
