Official breaks down wild touchdown by Packers receiver Dontayvion Wicks: ‘Today’s receivers make those plays’

A referee from the Thanksgiving matchup between the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions offered a detailed breakdown of the controversial touchdown scored by Packers wideout Dontayvion Wicks.

The play happened early in the second quarter, when Wicks hauled in a 22-yard strike from Jordan Love. Despite tight coverage, he stayed upright and managed to keep both feet inside the end zone before stepping out, preserving the score.

After the game, Lions beat writer Colton Pouncy spoke with Mark Butterworth, the NFL’s Vice President of Instant Replay, to get clarity on why the ruling on the field stood.

Pouncy asked what officials saw that convinced them Wicks had firm possession and got both feet down. Butterworth explained that since the initial call was a touchdown, replay needed clear evidence to overturn it—and instead they saw Wicks controlling the ball, landing his right foot, then his left, and taking a third step after crossing the goal line.

When Pouncy pressed about whether any part of the catch looked like a bobble, Butterworth said there was no concern about that. He noted that today’s receivers are skilled enough to secure the ball even when bringing it down from above their bodies, and the rules allow them to draw the ball in as they complete the catch.
