Dan Campbell admits fault for Lions’ costly defensive mistakes

Dan Campbell didn’t hide from the blame after the Detroit Lions’ loss to the Green Bay Packers on Thursday, acknowledging that several preventable defensive mistakes played a major role in the defeat.

Speaking with reporters Saturday, the Lions head coach addressed two significant breakdowns on defense — errors that have been rare for a unit coached by Kelvin Sheppard.

The first issue showed up early, on the sixth snap of Green Bay’s opening possession. Facing a third-and-1 at Detroit’s 40-yard line, the Lions lined up with only 10 defenders. The missing player left a noticeable gap inside, and Packers running back Josh Jacobs took advantage, bursting up the middle for a 13-yard gain — one of his best runs of the game. That play eventually led to a 45-yard field goal by kicker Brandon McManus, giving Green Bay an early 3-0 lead.

Later, with just over three minutes left before halftime, Detroit had the opposite problem. With the Packers inside the 10-yard line, the Lions were flagged for having 12 men on the field. Two snaps after the penalty, Jordan Love found Romeo Doubs for an eight-yard touchdown, extending Green Bay’s advantage to 17-7.

Campbell said those kinds of errors are inexcusable because they have nothing to do with talent and everything to do with discipline and organization. He emphasized that, as head coach, the responsibility ultimately falls on him.

Both miscues appeared to happen during defensive-back substitutions. Detroit was rotating Terrion Arnold — returning from concussion protocol — along with Amik Robertson and Rock Ya-Sin throughout the game.

Campbell reiterated that the team hasn’t been sharp enough with the details and that he intends to address the issue directly.

With five games left and the Lions currently outside the playoff picture, Campbell noted that there’s little time left to clean things up. Detroit will try to regroup quickly, with a Thursday night matchup against the Dallas Cowboys at Ford Field up next.
