Former Buffalo Bills wideout Mack Hollins is challenging a league-issued fine after being penalized for a hit that many felt shouldn’t have drawn punishment.
Now a member of the New England Patriots, Hollins was slapped with a five-figure fine for unnecessary roughness during last week’s victory over the New York Jets — a call that raised eyebrows among fans and analysts. Hollins has formally filed an appeal.
Hollins Pushes Back Against NFL Fine
According to Karen Guregian of MassLive.com, the veteran wide receiver was fined $20,278 for a play that didn’t appear malicious. Early in the second quarter, with New England holding a 14–7 lead, Hollins made an eight-yard catch and subtly dipped his head as he braced for incoming defenders.
Jets cornerbacks Brandon Stephens and Isaiah Oliver finished the tackle, and Hollins ended the day with four receptions for 64 yards. As Mike Reiss reported, Hollins will contest the fine.
The NFL argued that Hollins initiated contact by lowering his helmet—something the league has highlighted in recent seasons. High-profile running backs like Saquon Barkley and Christian McCaffrey have also been fined this year for similar actions.
The helmet-lowering rule has been on the books since 2018, though penalties are rarely called during games. At the time the rule was created, competition committee chairman Rich McKay said the league wanted to align with NCAA targeting rules and prevent catastrophic injuries such as the one suffered by Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier.
“Players are getting too comfortable using their helmets aggressively rather than as protection,” McKay said. “This rule is meant to reset that mentality.”
Bills Feel Hollins’ Absence
Buffalo’s receiving group has struggled to find rhythm this season, making Hollins’ departure more noticeable. While his numbers last year — 31 catches for 378 yards — were modest, he led the team with five receiving touchdowns, especially serving as a reliable red-zone option.
The Bills have scrambled to adjust their receiving corps late in the season. After signing Mecole Hardman, they lost him to injured reserve almost immediately. This week, Buffalo added Brandin Cooks following his release from the New Orleans Saints, cutting Elijah Moore to open a roster spot.
Cooks expressed enthusiasm about joining quarterback Josh Allen.
“The chance to play with Josh is something you just don’t turn down,” Cooks told reporters, per ESPN.
He added that the Bills have earned an excellent reputation among players around the league.
“Josh is special,” said Cooks. “You always hear about how great this organization is and how well they treat players. I’m really grateful to be here.”
It remains uncertain how Cooks will be used in Buffalo’s upcoming matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers, a game with major postseason stakes. The Bills currently sit at No. 7 in the AFC, holding onto the conference’s final playoff spot.
