Matt LaFleur wasn’t thrilled with Ben Johnson’s jab during his introductory press conference
When Johnson was introduced as the new head coach of Chicago Bears earlier this year, he didn’t just praise the other NFC North coaches — he also took aim at the coach of the Green Bay Packers, Matt LaFleur. In his opening presser, Johnson said, “I kind of enjoyed beating Matt LaFleur twice a year,” a line clearly intended to highlight his success against Green Bay while with the Detroit Lions.
At first LaFleur tried to brush it off. Speaking on the “Bussin’ With The Boys” podcast, he said point-blank: “I don’t know Ben Johnson…. Do I have beef? I don’t know Ben Johnson.” He went on to add that while he “respects him as a football coach,” he wasn’t interested in fueling drama.
Still, his reaction — or lack thereof — spoke volumes. Though he publicly downplayed the issue, insiders and rival fans alike interpreted Johnson’s remarks as a clear shot, and LaFleur’s quiet response didn’t erase the sting.
Now, with the Bears and Packers set to clash again soon, many expect Johnson’s words to resurface — and for LaFleur and his team to use them as added fuel for the rivalry on the field.
