Fans Blast Officials Over Controversial OPI Call on Cowboys Tight End Jake Ferguson

Fans were quick to criticize the officials after a highly disputed offensive pass interference call against Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson during Thursday night’s matchup with the Lions.

Dallas was working on a late-game rally, having trimmed Detroit’s lead to 30–27 early in the fourth quarter. But after the Lions answered with another touchdown to push the margin back to 10, the Cowboys pressed on with another drive. Midway through the quarter, they reached the red zone and faced a third-and-3 from Detroit’s 11-yard line. Dak Prescott targeted Ferguson on the play, but the pass fell incomplete—and a flag came out. To the surprise of many, Ferguson was charged with offensive pass interference despite there being little evidence of a push-off or illegal contact.

Prime Video rules analyst Terry McAulay immediately disagreed with the ruling, noting that Ferguson simply maneuvered through the defender legally and was actually the one grabbed. “I don’t see offensive pass interference at all,” he said.

Plenty of viewers echoed McAulay’s frustration on social media.

The penalty was ultimately declined, allowing Dallas to settle for a field goal that narrowed the gap to seven. But Detroit answered again, with Jahmyr Gibbs punching in a touchdown to stretch the lead to 44–30, which would stand as the final score.

It wasn’t the only confusing officiating moment of the night. Earlier, what appeared to be a Lions safety was overturned when officials determined Prescott had escaped the end zone before contact.

In the end, though, the Lions’ performance left little doubt. Detroit capitalized on Dallas’s three turnovers, racked up five sacks, and generally outplayed the Cowboys in a game vital to both teams’ NFC playoff hopes. The Lions earned the win with a more complete effort.
