The Detroit Lions’ offense has looked like an entirely different unit this season when Jahmyr Gibbs reaches the end zone.
Whenever the second-year running back scores — whether on the ground or through the air from Jared Goff — Detroit has yet to lose. The Lions are a perfect 8–0 in games where Gibbs registers a touchdown. In matchups where he doesn’t score, the team has gone 0–5, highlighting how closely his production aligns with Detroit’s success.
Head coach Dan Campbell noted that the former Alabama star continues to expand his role as a receiver and hasn’t come close to hitting his ceiling.
“He keeps improving. His routes sharpen up every week, and he just keeps ascending. There’s no limit to what he can become,” Campbell said. “He works. He’s sharp. He’s instinctive. He’s a great teammate. He’s special — and he’s really only beginning to scratch the surface.”
Running backs coach Tashard Choice has also pushed Gibbs to elevate his game, especially with both him and David Montgomery vying for touches.
“They both want the ball, and they both want to be that guy,” Choice told ESPN. “We’ve designed some new looks to make sure they each get opportunities, but the biggest thing I emphasize is maximizing every chance they get.”
Pro Football Hall of Famer Barry Sanders has been publicly impressed with Gibbs’ explosiveness. After scoring three times against the Cowboys, Gibbs matched Sanders’ record for the most touchdowns through a player’s first three NFL seasons (47).
Together, Gibbs and Montgomery form one of the league’s most dangerous backfield duos. Each has surpassed 1,000 yards from scrimmage and scored at least 10 touchdowns in both of the last two years — making them the first pair of teammates in NFL history to hit those marks in multiple seasons, consecutive or otherwise.
With his performance continuing to rise, speculation is building that Gibbs could be in line for a major contract extension once the 2025 campaign wraps up.
