Dan Campbell devastated after learning Brian Branch will miss the rest of the season

Lions head coach Dan Campbell was clearly devastated after learning that Brian Branch would miss the rest of the season.

In the 12 games he played in 2025, the young safety delivered 75 tackles, broke up nine passes, and added 2.5 sacks. Pro Football Focus graded him at 77.5—eighth out of 93 safeties—which reflects how well-rounded his game had become. He also placed fifth in pass-rush grade (81.5) and fourth against the run (82.6). Detroit brought in Damontae Kazee to help fill the hole, but it was obvious they weren’t going to find anyone who could replicate Branch’s impact.

Even so, the defense has no choice but to adjust. Heading into Week 15, the Lions sit 15th in total defense, giving up 323.9 yards per contest. At 8–5, they can’t afford any more setbacks, and Branch’s absence won’t be an acceptable explanation for falling short.

Campbell, however, knows just how vital Branch has been to the unit. The second-year defender has become a foundational piece and helped shape the identity of Detroit’s defense. The hope is that once Branch is healthy
