Campbell Delivers Short Message With Lions Facing Playoff Uncertainty

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell kept his message short and direct as his team’s postseason chances took another hit following a Week 15 defeat against the Los Angeles Rams.

Detroit isn’t officially eliminated yet, but the path to the playoffs has narrowed significantly. The Lions currently sit outside the playoff field as the NFC’s eighth seed, trailing the Green Bay Packers by a game and a half for the final Wild Card position after their Thanksgiving loss. To keep their hopes alive, Detroit must win out and get help elsewhere — either Green Bay dropping two of its final three games or the San Francisco 49ers losing every remaining matchup.

The odds are long, but Campbell isn’t focused on probability charts or hypothetical outcomes. His approach is simple: concentrate on the next game and nothing else.

“Go to work, man,” Campbell said when asked about his message to the team, according to The Athletic’s Colton Pouncy. “That’s it. Forget the what-ifs. We’ve got to win. That’s always been the goal — Week 1, Week 2, Week 8 — and it’s still the goal now. Let’s find a way to get a win.”

Detroit closes the regular season with matchups against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota Vikings, and Chicago Bears. Pittsburgh is battling for control of the AFC North, while both Minnesota and Chicago present division challenges that look different than earlier in the season.

The Lions dominated the Bears 52–21 in Week 2, but Chicago has surged since then, winning six of its last seven games and emerging as a contender in the NFC North. Minnesota, meanwhile, handed Detroit a surprising home loss earlier in the year following J.J. McCarthy’s return from injury, though the Vikings have struggled recently, losing four of their past six games.

Campbell’s message is clear: winning is the only thing within the Lions’ control — even if accomplishing that wo

n’t be easy.
