For Pittsburgh Steelers rookie Derrick Harmon, the biggest thrill this weekend isn’t the chance to return to his hometown — it’s the opportunity to finally be back on the field.
After sitting out three straight games and five total during his first NFL season because of knee issues, the Steelers’ first-round draft pick is expected to suit up Sunday against the Detroit Lions. While the matchup takes place in the city where Harmon grew up, his focus is firmly on football rather than nostalgia.
“I’m just happy to be playing again,” Harmon said Thursday. “Going home is cool and all, especially with family there, but getting back out there with my teammates is what I’ve really been waiting for.”
Harmon participated fully in practice for a second consecutive day, signaling he’s ready to return. Head coach Mike Tomlin revealed that Harmon could have played Monday night versus Miami but was kept out as a precaution.
“I didn’t love having to wait,” Harmon admitted, “but I trust Coach T. He’s doing what’s best for me and for the team.”
The Detroit native is no stranger to Ford Field. He recalls playing there several times growing up, including postseason games during his high school career at Loyola. Despite the stadium’s artificial turf — which was updated after he left for college — Harmon isn’t concerned.
“At the end of the day, it’s still football,” he said.
As a kid, Harmon idolized Lions defensive standout Ndamukong Suh, who built his reputation during his early NFL years in Detroit. Now, Harmon gets his own opportunity to play in front of friends and family in the same city.
He’s unsure exactly how many relatives will be in attendance, noting the team only provides a limited number of tickets.
“My phone’s been blowing up,” Harmon joked. “But once I realized the extras were coming out of my bank account, things got a little quieter.”
