Ex-Detroit Lions QB joins new team following Steelers workout

Former Detroit Lions quarterback Hendon Hooker has landed a new opportunity, joining the New York Jets’ practice squad shortly after participating in a workout with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Hooker was one of several skill-position players invited to try out for Pittsburgh, a move that appeared to be focused on evaluating potential late-season or future roster additions. Despite the visit, the Steelers did not sign him, and Hooker instead found a spot with the Jets a few days later.
The Lions originally selected Hooker in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, but his time in Detroit was brief, as he was released prior to the start of the current season. He later spent a short stint on the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad before being let go on November 4.

Now in New York, Hooker reunites with a familiar face. Jets defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn previously held the same role in Detroit during Hooker’s time with the Lions, giving the quarterback some continuity in coaching relationships.

Before entering the NFL, Hooker built an impressive college résumé. He began his collegiate career at Virginia Tech and later transferred to Tennessee, where he emerged as one of the SEC’s top quarterbacks and significantly boosted his draft profile.
At the professional level, Hooker has appeared in three NFL games, completing six of nine pass attempts for 62 yards.

Pittsburgh’s workout session included several other players in addition to Hooker. Quarterback Jack Plummer, who previously played at Louisville, also participated. The tryout featured tight ends J.J. Galbreath—who spent time with the Steelers during training camp and on the practice squad—and Caleb Granger.

The Steelers also evaluated three running backs—Tre Stewart, Jordan Waters, and Ian Stewart—along with wide receivers Johnny Johnson, Chris Tyree, and Brandon Smith.
