Former Lions assistant fighting cancer set to join Patriots at Super Bowl

Former Detroit Lions assistant Terrell Williams is set to be part of the New England Patriots’ Super Bowl trip after stepping away earlier this season to undergo treatment for prostate cancer.

Williams, who spent the 2024 season with Detroit as the defensive run game coordinator and defensive line coach, was hired by New England as defensive coordinator in January 2025. However, in September, Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel revealed that Williams had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and would temporarily leave the team to focus on his health.

At the time, Vrabel spoke emotionally about the situation, emphasizing Williams’ importance both personally and professionally. He explained that Williams was consulting with specialists and beginning treatment, with the goal of recovery and a return to full health.

During Williams’ absence, inside linebackers coach Zak Kuhr assumed play-calling responsibilities for the Patriots’ defense. On Thursday, Vrabel provided a positive update, sharing that Williams has made good progress over the past five months and will travel with the team to Santa Clara for Super Bowl LX, where New England will face the Seattle Seahawks.

Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs praised Williams, referring to him as a “road warrior” and noting how meaningful his presence is for the entire roster.

Although Williams spent only one season with the Lions, his influence in Detroit was significant. Head coach Dan Campbell previously described him as an exceptionally sharp coach with a rare ability to connect with players on an individual level. Campbell explained that Williams tailored his approach to each player—sometimes pushing, sometimes encouraging, and sometimes offering quiet guidance—demonstrating a deep understanding of what motivates different personalities.

Around the league, other Lions-related notes continue to emerge. Lions offensive assistant Marques Tuiasosopo, once a hopeful Super Bowl participant himself, is currently in Alabama working with quarterbacks as part of the Senior Bowl’s American Team coaching staff.

Meanwhile, Detroit Free Press reporter Dave Birkett has been spending time at the Senior Bowl, speaking with several Lions draft prospects. Elsewhere, edge rusher Ahmed Hassanein has drawn attention online with videos showcasing his intense offseason training regimen.
