A Detroit Lions supporter involved in a sideline confrontation with Steelers wide receiver D.K. Metcalf has filed a $100 million lawsuit stemming from the incident.
According to a report published Tuesday by The Detroit Metro Times, the fan — identified as Ryan Kennedy — is suing Metcalf, the Pittsburgh Steelers, former NFL receiver Chad Johnson, and multiple corporate entities. The lawsuit includes claims of defamation, assault, and battery.
The altercation occurred during a December game and led to Metcalf receiving a two-game regular-season suspension from the NFL.
In the legal filing, Kennedy maintains that he did not direct any racial slurs toward Metcalf. Instead, he claims he merely shouted Metcalf’s first name and engaged in what he describes as standard fan heckling. Kennedy also alleges that Metcalf was the one who initiated physical contact.
The defamation claim centers on comments made by Chad Johnson during an episode of the “Nightcap” podcast, which he co-hosts with former NFL tight end Shannon Sharpe. On the show, Johnson stated that Kennedy had used a racial slur and made an offensive remark about Metcalf’s mother. Johnson attributed that information to what he called a “reliable source who wears No. 4,” implying Metcalf himself.
Metcalf has not publicly commented in detail about the incident, aside from offering brief remarks during a media Q&A session with the Steelers.
The Metro Times report also notes that Kennedy says the allegations led to severe personal and professional consequences, including death threats, harassing messages, and hate mail. He claims the controversy damaged both his reputation and his mortgage-lending business.
As of now, none of the defendants named in the lawsuit — including Metcalf — have issued public statements responding to the legal action.
