Lions Coaching Staff Shrinks as Another Assistant Joins Aaron Glenn in New York

The Detroit Lions have seen yet another coach depart their staff, and once again, the destination is New York.

NFL insider Adam Schefter reports that the New York Jets are bringing in Lions assistant tight ends coach Seth Ryan to serve as their new passing game coordinator. The move further strengthens the growing connection between Detroit and New York as Jets head coach Aaron Glenn continues to assemble his coaching group.

Ryan’s addition is the latest example of Glenn leaning on familiar faces as he builds his staff, opting for coaches he has worked with and trusts. Despite his young age, Ryan has already built an impressive résumé that has caught the attention of teams around the league.

Only 31 years old, Ryan joined the Lions organization in 2021 as an offensive quality control coach. He later transitioned into an assistant wide receivers role before taking on responsibilities with the tight ends. His experience across several offensive positions helped position him as a strong candidate for a larger role in New York.

The hire also adds to a unique family connection with the Jets. Ryan now becomes the third generation in his family to coach the franchise, following in the footsteps of his father, Rex Ryan, and his grandfather, Buddy Ryan—both of whom played notable roles in Jets history.

Although Detroit would prefer to keep its talented assistants, Ryan’s exit underscores the growing respect the Lions’ coaching staff has earned throughout the NFL. Losing coaches to promotions elsewhere is often a byproduct of organizational success.

For the Jets, Glenn gains another familiar and trusted assistant. For the Lions, it’s yet another sign that their coaches are becoming highly sought-after across the league.
