The New York Jets have wasted no time shaking things up this offseason. Under new head coach Aaron Glenn, the organization has overhauled much of its coaching staff, parting ways with numerous position coaches as it looks to reset the direction of the team.
The offensive side of the ball, in particular, will look very different. Former NFL head coach Frank Reich has been brought in to lead the offense as coordinator, but he’s just one of several new faces joining the staff.
One of the most intriguing additions comes with a familiar last name. ESPN insider Adam Schefter reports that the Jets are bringing in Seth Ryan, currently an assistant tight ends coach with the Detroit Lions, to serve as their passing game coordinator. With the move, the Jets add another chapter to the long-standing Ryan family connection with the franchise.
Schefter described the hire as the arrival of “a new generation of Ryans” in New York, noting that Seth Ryan will leave Detroit to take on a larger role with the Jets.
The Ryan name carries plenty of history with the organization. Seth’s father, Rex Ryan, led the Jets from 2009 to 2013, compiling a strong regular-season record and guiding the team to back-to-back playoff appearances, including postseason wins in each run. Those years are still remembered as some of the franchise’s most successful in recent history.
The family’s ties to the Jets stretch back even further. Rex’s father, Buddy Ryan, served as the team’s defensive line coach from 1968 to 1975 and was part of the staff that helped deliver the Jets’ only Super Bowl championship in the 1968 season.
Now, more than a decade after Rex Ryan’s tenure ended, his son will return the family name to the organization in a key offensive role. Glenn and Reich are counting on Seth Ryan to contribute to an offense that struggled mightily last season and desperately needs improvement.
While there are no guarantees, the hire brings an interesting mix of familiarity and fresh perspective. Given how low the bar was offensively last year, the Jets are hoping this move helps spark real progress heading into the 2026 season—and perhaps adds a bit of Ryan family magic back to the franchise.
