New York Jets Reportedly Showing Interest in $6M Veteran Detroit Lions Linebacker

The New York Jets appear to be fully committed to a long-term rebuild. That direction became obvious at last season’s trade deadline when they dealt cornerstone players like Quinnen Williams to the Dallas Cowboys and Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts.

Armed with a stockpile of draft capital over the next two years, the Jets seem poised to address major roster gaps — particularly at quarterback and wide receiver — through the draft. At the same time, they are in an enviable financial position. With ample salary cap flexibility, New York has the freedom to pursue high-profile free agents if it chooses to accelerate the rebuilding process.

According to Connor Hughes of SportsNet New York, one potential target is veteran linebacker Alex Anzalone, who most recently played for the Detroit Lions. Anzalone previously worked under current Jets head coach Aaron Glenn during Glenn’s tenure as Detroit’s defensive coordinator.

Hughes pointed out that one notable aspect of Glenn’s first season in New York was his decision not to bring former Lions players with him — a move that’s somewhat uncommon for a new head coach. While Glenn did add coaches he was familiar with, he refrained from signing ex-Detroit players to help establish his culture in the locker room.

Anzalone, who turns 32 in September, spent five seasons in Detroit, including four playing in Glenn’s defensive system. With linebacker Quincy Williams unlikely to return and Jamien Sherwood coming off an underwhelming 2025 campaign, Anzalone could fill both a leadership and on-field need.

Given Glenn’s history with him, Anzalone would be a logical addition. Although he is entering the later stages of his career, his familiarity with the scheme and veteran presence could help stabilize the Jets’ defense during this transitional phase.
