Detroit Lions Blocked Miami Dolphins From Interviewing Assistant Coach

The Detroit Lions have reportedly denied a request from the Miami Dolphins to interview one of their offensive assistants.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz shared that Miami sought permission to speak with offensive assistant and former NFL quarterback Bruce Gradkowski regarding their quarterbacks coach vacancy. However, Detroit declined the request. Gradkowski, who previously found success as an offensive coordinator in the XFL with St. Louis, is considered an up-and-coming coach within the Lions organization.

Miami’s new head coach, Jeff Hafley, most recently served as defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers before landing his first NFL head coaching role.

While Detroit’s full coaching lineup has not yet been formally unveiled, an announcement is expected in the near future.

Offensive coordinator Drew Petzing recently explained why he believes he is well-suited for head coach Dan Campbell’s staff. Speaking with SB Nation, Petzing pointed to his confidence and broad experience across multiple offensive roles as key strengths. He emphasized that leading an offense requires accountability and a comprehensive understanding of every position group.

Petzing noted that his diverse coaching background — from teaching blocking techniques in wide-zone schemes to instructing receivers on releases and quarterbacks on footwork and reads — has helped prepare him for coordinating responsibilities.

Despite overall team struggles during the 2025 season, Detroit’s offense remained one of the league’s top-scoring units. Petzing expressed optimism that his three seasons calling plays in Arizona helped refine his decision-making and ability to tailor schemes around available talent. He added that he strives to improve with each game and season, continuing to grow in the role.
