Ben Johnson is unlikely to leave the Detroit Lions for just any head coaching position, but there are a few teams he could consider after this season if they’re available.
As the offensive coordinator for the NFL’s No. 1 scoring offense, Johnson is in an enviable position, with the Lions performing at a high level. Despite his success, Johnson has previously been cautious about pursuing head coaching opportunities. Still, he’s likely to be a highly sought-after candidate once again following this season.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter discussed Johnson’s potential for a head coaching job during Thursday’s edition of Get Up, offering key insights into his mindset.
“Ben Johnson’s gonna be very, very selective about the place that he chooses to go, if he decides even to leave Detroit. He’s gonna be very careful,” Schefter said. “I don’t know that he desires to leave that division to head, in the division, to go to a place that you’re talking about the dysfunction that has existed within that organization. We’ll see, that’s up to him. But I believe he’s gonna be very selective in how he chooses to do his business.”
When Mike Greenberg expressed that he thought Schefter would say Johnson would be pursued for head coaching roles, Schefter confirmed that notion, emphasizing Johnson’s careful approach to potential opportunities.
“He (Johnson) will be (sought after).”, Schefter said. “But just because, let’s just say, there’s eight openings this year, and let’s just say, eight teams have him in their wish list, doesn’t mean he’s going to be interviewing with eight teams. I think if Ben Johnson is interviewing with anybody, this year, he’s interviewing with the intention that he’s going to take that job.”
Schefter didn’t reveal any breaking news, but it’s clear that Johnson will be discerning when it comes to considering head coaching jobs, and he will undoubtedly be a top candidate. The question remains whether he’ll ever leave the Lions for one of these positions. Assuming there are eight openings after this season, at least one should be appealing enough for him to take seriously, right?
We can eliminate a few potential openings that Johnson is unlikely to seriously consider, such as the New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, and possibly the Chicago Bears (even if he showed interest last year). The Las Vegas Raiders may also make that list if they end up with a vacancy.
Now, let’s take a closer look at some head coaching jobs that could actually entice Ben Johnson in 2025.
