Following Dak Prescott’s hamstring injury, which could potentially end his season, the Dallas Cowboys are taking action to strengthen their quarterback depth. Prescott, who is currently in New York consulting with specialists, is expected to undergo surgery,
leaving the team with a pressing need for backup options after a disheartening 34-6 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Cooper Rush, who stepped in as the starter, struggled in his first game since 2022.
He completed just 13 of 23 passes for 45 yards and committed two crucial fumbles.
Trey Lance, the third-string quarterback, also failed to spark the offense.
Despite these setbacks, head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed that Rush would remain the starting quarterback, even as owner Jerry Jones continued to suggest a possible “Trey Lance Package.”
With Prescott out and both backups struggling, the Cowboys have officially added quarterback Will Grier to the practice squad.
This decision likely stems from the team’s concerns over the performances of Rush and Lance, but it may also be a precautionary measure to ensure they have an emergency quarterback in place, given the numerous injuries that have plagued the roster this season.
As Mike Fisher put it, it’s simply “one more arm.”
Grier, a third-round pick by the Carolina Panthers in 2019, first joined the Cowboys in 2021 as a third-string quarterback.
He spent much of his time with the team on the practice squad, but after brief stints with the Bengals, Patriots, and Chargers, he returned to Dallas following a brief period with the Eagles earlier this season.
Grier had a standout summer with the Cowboys in 2022, becoming a “folk hero” of sorts, before being cut after the team traded for Lance.
Grier’s return is part of a broader effort by the Cowboys to shore up their offense as they prepare to face the Houston Texans.
The Texans, under the leadership of quarterback C.J. Stroud, have become one of the AFC’s top teams with a 6-4 record, though they are on a two-game losing streak.
This gives Dallas an opportunity to bounce back and regain momentum at home.
