The Detroit Lions made a pair of roster moves ahead of their Week 11 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Before the game, the Lions elevated tight end James Mitchell from the practice squad to the active roster for Sunday’s contest.
This marks Mitchell’s season debut after being released at the end of training camp and returning to the practice squad. The 2022 fifth-round pick will step in with the Lions needing depth, as Sam LaPorta was ruled out due to a shoulder injury.
With LaPorta sidelined, the Lions will turn to Mitchell, along with Brock Wright and Shane Zylstra, to take on larger roles in the offense.
Over his first two seasons, Mitchell has recorded 13 catches for 141 yards and one touchdown. Lions passing game coordinator and tight ends coach Tanner Engstrand noted that Mitchell has shown growth in his time working against Detroit’s defense on the scout team.
“He’s done a great job,” Engstrand said, via the team’s social media. “Last week, when we watched the tape of the scout team offense, he was really focused on his footwork, getting the right fit, and driving defenders off the ball.
We’re seeing that growth, which gives us confidence that if James has to play this week, no problem. Next man up. We have confidence in him to get the job done. We’re excited to see him out there.”
