FINALLY, Lions Add Veteran David Long Amid Alex Anzalone’s Absence, Eye Colts Matchup

Detroit Enhances Linebacker Depth Ahead of Crucial Game

The Detroit Lions are taking proactive steps to address the void left by linebacker Alex Anzalone, who recently sustained a wrist injury. In a bid to strengthen their defensive unit, the team signed veteran linebacker David Long to their practice squad on Monday. This move comes at a pivotal moment as the Lions prepare for a key matchup against the Indianapolis Colts.

A Proven Defender Joins the Squad

David Long brings significant experience to the Lions’ roster. Having started six games for the Miami Dolphins earlier this season, Long showcased his defensive prowess, amassing 38 tackles before being waived after losing his starting position. Known for his versatility, Long is expected to add much-needed depth to the Lions’ linebacker corps during Anzalone’s recovery.

Despite his addition, head coach Dan Campbell clarified that Long will not step into Anzalone’s starting role. Instead, the bulk of the workload will fall to Jack Campbell and Malcolm Rodriguez, two players the team is confident can handle the increased responsibility.

Adjusting to Challenges

Dan Campbell emphasized the complexity of adjusting the defensive strategy in Anzalone’s absence, particularly against a Colts offense led by dynamic quarterback Anthony Richardson. “So much of it is about who we’re playing,” Campbell explained in comments shared by the Detroit Free Press. “Richardson’s a running quarterback, and they’re using him a lot more in that regard, so do you want to go nickel? Do you want to go base? Do we need three linebackers? We have to answer all of these things.”

Campbell’s remarks highlight the strategic balancing act the Lions face as they adapt to their opponent’s strengths while ensuring their defense remains solid.

Depth and Flexibility for the Long Haul

David Long’s presence provides more than just a stopgap measure—it offers flexibility and insurance for a Lions team aiming to maintain their strong season trajectory. As the Lions navigate the challenges posed by Anzalone’s injury, the depth Long brings to the linebacker group could prove invaluable.

Eyes on the Colts

With a critical game against the Colts on the horizon, the Lions are fine-tuning their defensive lineup to counteract Richardson’s dual-threat capabilities. The addition of Long ensures that Detroit’s defense has the reinforcement it needs to stay competitive and adaptable.

The Detroit Lions’ signing of David Long reflects their commitment to addressing immediate challenges without compromising their long-term goals. While Jack Campbell and Malcolm Rodriguez take the lead in Anzalone’s absence, Long’s versatility offers the Lions a reliable option to bolster their defense.

As Detroit prepares for their upcoming matchup, the team’s ability to adapt and overcome obstacles will be key in maintaining their strong season momentum.
