BC Lions Shake Things Up: Head Coach Campbell Fired, Vernon Adams Jr. on Trading Block

Major Staff Changes Signal a New Era for the BC Lions

The BC Lions have made seismic changes in leadership and roster strategy as they prepare for the 2025 season. On Wednesday, the organization announced the dismissal of Head Coach and Co-General Manager Rick Campbell, alongside plans to trade quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. These moves signify a turning point for the team, which aims to revamp its operations following a mixed 2024 season.

Leadership Overhaul Brings New Roles and Fresh Vision

The Lions have promoted Ryan Rigmaiden to General Manager, while Neil McEvoy transitions into the role of President of Football Operations. Both moves reflect the organization’s commitment to refining its leadership. Lions President Duane Vienneau acknowledged Campbell’s contributions, stating:

> “We thank Rick Campbell for playing a major role in bringing our franchise back to respectability and contention while navigating us through some very tough waters upon his arrival. He’s a great coach and a great friend.”

Despite Campbell’s successes, including two 12-6 seasons in 2022 and 2023, the Lions fell short of expectations in 2024, finishing 9-9 and losing the Western Semi-Final to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. With Campbell now on the radar of the Edmonton Elks, the Lions are focused on future growth under new leadership.

Rick Campbell’s Legacy with the Lions

Hired ahead of the canceled 2020 season, Campbell led the team through steady improvement. The Lions went from a disappointing 5-9 record in 2021 to back-to-back strong regular seasons in 2022 and 2023. However, postseason struggles and a lackluster 2024 campaign prompted the decision to move in a new direction.
