The Detroit Lions will aim for their ninth straight win as they open the NFL’s Thanksgiving tripleheader against the Chicago Bears.
Averaging 32.7 points per game, the highest in the league, the Lions’ offensive success has been largely fueled by their running-back duo, Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery.
The two backs have adopted the video game-inspired nicknames of Sonic (Gibbs) and Knuckles (Montgomery), and CBS has featured these alter egos in a promo for Thursday’s game, which kicks off at 11:30 a.m. CST at Ford Field in Detroit.
Gibbs and Montgomery both joined the Lions last season, with Gibbs drafted 12th overall in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Alabama, and Montgomery signed as a free agent from the Chicago Bears.
Together, they helped lead Detroit to its first NFC Championship Game appearance since 1991, and the Lions have continued their success this season with 10 wins in 11 games.
In Detroit’s 24-6 victory over the Indianapolis Colts last Sunday, Gibbs ran for two touchdowns and Montgomery added one, pushing their season totals to 10 and 11 rushing touchdowns, respectively.
This milestone made Gibbs and Montgomery the first running-back duo in NFL history to rush for at least 10 touchdowns each in consecutive seasons.
With six games still left in the regular season, they have the chance to add to their historic achievements.
