After Tough December, Lakers Have a Golden Opportunity in January

The Los Angeles Lakers face a softer schedule in January, and it could be just what they need to climb up the standings and solidify their playoff position.

The Lakers have survived a tumultuous December, which included a grueling road trip and a demoralizing loss to the Miami Heat. However, the team has bounced back well, finishing the month strong with five wins in their last seven games. Now, as the calendar turns to January, the Lakers have a golden opportunity to make significant strides.

A Rocky December with Hopeful Signs

December was nothing short of a rollercoaster for the Lakers. They endured a challenging stretch, with six of their seven games played on the road, including a crushing defeat to the Miami Heat. Yet, that loss seemed to fuel their turnaround. They ended the month on a high note, capped by a hard-fought Christmas Day victory against the Golden State Warriors.

The shift in momentum gives hope that the team can continue to improve as they enter a much more favorable portion of the schedule.

January: The Perfect Opportunity to Capitalize

Entering the new year, the Lakers are presented with one of the easiest schedules in the league. After spending the last month playing 10 road games in their last 14, the team now gets to play 11 of their next 14 at home. This extended homestand includes a stretch from January 9 to January 23, where they will play only three road games, all against non-playoff teams.

For a team that’s struggled with consistency, this lighter schedule could provide the perfect setting for a strong run.

A Chance to Gain Ground in the Western Conference

Currently sitting in sixth place in the Western Conference, the Lakers are in a tight race for playoff positioning. With only five games separating the second and eleventh spots, every win matters. The Lakers’ strength of schedule in January ranks as one of the easiest, with an average opponent win percentage of just .434. This is a stark contrast to the challenging stretch they endured in December, where they faced tougher competition.

The stretch includes games against six teams that are currently outside of the playoff picture. While Cleveland and Boston will certainly be tough matchups, these six games against non-playoff teams provide the Lakers with a real chance to secure wins and build momentum.

A Critical Moment for the Lakers

Last season, the Lakers had a similar opportunity but faltered, eventually having to fight for a play-in spot. They cannot afford to squander this opportunity again. With a strong showing in January, the Lakers can not only avoid the play-in race but also position themselves for home-court advantage in the playoffs.

As the competition in the Western Conference tightens, the Lakers have a chance to gain ground on their rivals. January could be the month that sets the tone for the remainder of their season.

If the Lakers are serious contenders, this is their moment to prove it. With a favorable schedule ahead, it’s time for them to take advantage and start building the foundation for a deep playoff run.
