Pickett, McKee shine as Eagles crush Cowboys, stepping up with impressive performances under pressure.
The Eagles have embraced a “next man up” mentality all season, whether it was A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Lane Johnson, or Dallas Goedert missing time.
That approach was put to the test again on Sunday when Jalen Hurts sat out with a concussion.
Last week, lifelong Eagles fan and former Steeler Kenny Pickett stepped in after Hurts’ injury and nearly led the team to victory against Washington, falling just short in the final seconds.
Pickett played through a rib injury sustained during that game and worked hard this week to be ready.
With a full week of practice as the starter, Pickett made the most of his first start for the Eagles, earning praise from teammates.
“Being here is incredible,” Pickett said. “It feels like college with how much everyone cares for each other.
We’re all pulling together, and the talent on this team makes it special. I’m loving every moment and want to keep it going.”
Pickett controlled the offense in the first half, completing 10 of 15 passes for 143 yards and a touchdown to DeVonta Smith, achieving a QB rating of 119.6. However, a hit to his injured ribs forced him out of the game at halftime.
“I gave it everything I had,” Pickett said. “I have no regrets. We got the win, and that’s all that matters.
It was a special day for the team.” Teammates echoed his grit, with Lane Johnson calling him a competitor and a fighter.
Backup quarterback Tanner McKee entered early in the third quarter and quickly made an impact.
On his second drive, he found A.J. Brown in the end zone on third-and-8 for his first career touchdown pass.
“It’s surreal,” McKee said. “You dream of moments like this, and to play in the NFL, throw a touchdown, and win is unbelievable.”
Despite not knowing he’d play, McKee said his preparation each week mimics that of a starter.
“I always prepare as if I’m starting,” McKee explained. “Last night, I ran through scenarios over and over so I could just react and play instinctively.”
His readiness showed, as he threw two touchdowns, including a 25-yard strike to Smith in the fourth quarter, helping the Eagles dominate the Cowboys 41-7.
Pickett praised McKee, saying, “I’m so happy for him. We spend so much time together in the QB room, and it’s great to see him succeed.”
The experience for both quarterbacks will only help them grow. “It’s a next-man-up mentality, and everyone has each other’s back,” McKee said.
“When I went in, the guys had full confidence in me, just as we do in anyone else. That’s what makes this team special.”
