The Detroit Lions pulled off an exciting Monday Night Football comeback in San Francisco, with defensive back Kerby Joseph shining as one of the team’s standout performers.
In the fourth quarter, Joseph intercepted 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy for his ninth interception of the season and second of the game.
His celebration following the play was a nostalgic nod to the 1990s, as he mimicked the iconic dance of former 49ers safety Merton Hanks.
Joseph moved his neck forward and backward in rapid succession, emulating Hanks’ signature move.
ESPN commentator and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman immediately recognized the tribute.
“That’s the Merton Hanks dance, I know that one,” Aikman said during the broadcast. He also reminisced about playing against San Francisco, recalling how Hanks had intercepted him a few times.
The Lions’ defense had a shaky start, allowing 21 first-half points and trailing 21-13 at halftime.
However, Coach Dan Campbell’s adjustments paid off, as Detroit surged with an 18-point third quarter while limiting the 49ers to just seven points.
In a thrilling conclusion, the Lions defeated the 49ers 40-34, avenging their NFC Championship Game loss on January 28, 2024. The win marked their 14th victory of the 2024-2025 season, setting a new franchise record and cementing a historic year.
