5 Detroit Lions Free Agents Who Might Follow Aaron Glenn to the New York Jets

Aaron Glenn significantly boosted his head coaching credentials this season, and after weeks of rumors, he has officially become the new head coach of the New York Jets.

As a result, the Detroit Lions are now searching for a new defensive coordinator, something head coach Dan Campbell anticipated.

Along with assistant coaches who may follow Glenn to New York, some Lions players could also consider joining him in free agency.

Reports indicate that Glenn is looking to hire an experienced defensive coordinator, with Steve Wilks being a prominent candidate since Glenn was hired by the Jets.

However, the core defensive philosophy under Glenn is expected to reflect his Detroit approach, featuring frequent blitzing and heavy man coverage.

While the Jets already have defensive players suited to Glenn’s preferred style, he will likely want familiar faces who understand his scheme and fit his system. Several upcoming Lions free agents, who built strong relationships with Glenn over his four years in Detroit, may consider following him to New York.

Here are five Lions free agents who could join Glenn in New York.

The Lions signed Marcus Davenport to a one-year deal last offseason.

Despite his potential, injuries continue to plague him—he has played just six games over the last two seasons due to various setbacks, including an arm/elbow injury sustained in Week 3 this season.

Over his last 21 games, Davenport has recorded only three sacks, diminishing the promise he once showed as a former first-round pick.

As Davenport heads into 2025, he will likely join his fourth team in as many seasons. His options may be limited, but the Jets could present an opportunity.

Glenn was part of the New Orleans Saints’ coaching staff when Davenport was selected 14th overall in the 2018 draft.

For a low-cost, low-risk addition to their pass rush, the Jets could consider reuniting Glenn with Davenport.
