Throughout the 2025 NFL offseason, the Detroit Lions are expected to be connected to a number of high-profile players they could acquire.
With ample cap space and coming off a dominant 15-2 finish in 2024, the team is primed for a deep playoff run. Already considered potential suitors for major defensive upgrades, the Lions are now also being linked to a former All-Pro on offense.
In a February 4 appearance on Sportscaster, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler revealed (via A to Z Sports’ Mike Payton) that a league executive suggested Detroit could pursue Los Angeles Rams receiver Cooper Kupp.
The executive highlighted Detroit’s potential interest due to Kupp’s past connection with Jared Goff, with whom he played together and made Pro Bowls early in their careers. This established chemistry could make for an exciting reunion.
Kupp recently disclosed that the Rams have informed him they plan to trade him this offseason.
Despite this, it’s tough to see why Kupp would fit in Detroit.
While the Goff-Kupp connection is understandable, the Lions already boast two 1000-yard receivers, including one of the top wideouts in the NFL. Additionally, Sam LaPorta has averaged 800 yards per season over his first two years.
The Lions’ offense is also built around a heavy ground game with David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, along with one of the league’s best offensive lines. Given the existing talent in the passing game, it’s unclear how adding Kupp would significantly impact the team.
Should the move happen, Detroit would get a former elite receiver who caught 67 passes for 710 yards last season. Still, it seems like there are better fits for both Kupp and the Lions.
