Auburn Tigers

Auburn’s quarterback competition is considered one of the most intriguing in college football.

The Auburn Tigers faced a significant issue in 2024, particularly in the most crucial position in sports.

This is something they aim to resolve in 2025, with three strong contenders for the starting role, which promises to lead to an exciting competition. On3’s Pete Nakos highlighted Auburn’s quarterback battle as one to watch heading into spring, with three players vying for the top spot.

After inconsistent quarterback play in Auburn, with former Michigan State quarterback Payton Thorne starting most games under head coach Hugh Freeze over the last two years, the Tigers didn’t retain any scholarship quarterbacks from the 2023-24 season.

Nakos’s first listed quarterback is Jackson Arnold, who transferred from Oklahoma. The former five-star quarterback spent two seasons with the Sooners before entering the portal, ranking as the 47th-best player and the eighth-best QB according to On3.

Arnold played in 10 games for Oklahoma and is seen as the likely favorite to take over the starting job for Auburn.

Freeze didn’t stop with Arnold, however, adding another portal quarterback in former Stanford QB Ashton Daniels.

Daniels, currently ranked as the 83rd-best quarterback by On3, spent three seasons with Stanford before committing to Auburn.

Although Arnold and Daniels have different backgrounds, Daniels’s dual-threat ability could make him a standout option for the Tigers’ coaching staff this spring.

Lastly, Auburn also added five-star freshman quarterback Deuce Knight to complete their quarterback room.

Ranked as the fifth-best quarterback and the 25th overall player by On3, the highly rated prospect flipped his commitment from Notre Dame to Auburn and remained committed to Freeze and his staff.

Despite being a true freshman, Knight will have the chance to compete this spring against the more experienced quarterbacks and demonstrate why he was such a highly regarded recruit coming out of high school.
