Lions Named a Top Potential Landing Spot for Dre Greenlaw, $16.4 Million Linebacker

The Detroit Lions are poised to have several options to consider as they build their roster during the offseason.

The team has already been mentioned as a possible trade destination for big names like Myles Garrett, Cooper Kupp, and Maxx Crosby.

BThese high-profile trade targets are just the beginning, as the Lions could also make a splash in free agency.

In free agency, the Lions could emerge as a top contender for a linebacker who has played in two Super Bowls in his first six seasons.

Pro Football Focus’ Mason Cameron named the Lions as one of the best landing spots for San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw in an article highlighting top destinations for this year’s best free-agent linebackers.

When healthy, Greenlaw has consistently been a productive player throughout his six seasons with the 49ers.

He posted 92 tackles as a rookie, followed by 86 in just 13 games in his second season. Although his third year was cut short by injury, he came back strong in year four.

Greenlaw recorded 127 tackles and forced two fumbles during his fourth season, earning him a two-year, $16.4 million contract.

His first season on that contract was another success, with 120 tackles and five for a loss.

Unfortunately, he tore his Achilles in the Super Bowl, cutting his season short.

He spent much of 2024 rehabbing the injury, which could leave teams uncertain about his future performance.

This uncertainty might give teams the chance to sign him at a discount, with the Lions potentially willing to take a risk on him returning to his previous form.

The Lions might have a need at linebacker this offseason, as Derrick Barnes is set to hit free agency, and rumors suggest defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn may want to bring him back.

If Barnes leaves, Greenlaw could be an excellent replacement to bolster a linebacker corps that faced injuries last season and needs help against the run.
