Detroit Lions

This offseason is critical for the Detroit Lions’ ex-third-round pick.

ALLEN PARK – Brodric Martin has seen limited action with the Detroit Lions, appearing in just five games and playing 53 defensive snaps over two seasons.

As a third-round pick in 2023, Martin was always considered a long-term project. However, the fast-paced nature of the NFL means this offseason is a crucial period for the towering defensive tackle. Now midway through his rookie contract, his opportunity to secure a spot on the roster and establish a role is narrowing.

Despite suffering a preseason knee injury last year, Martin isn’t dwelling on setbacks. Instead, he is focused on his journey and is determined to maximize his offseason to make significant progress.

“I wouldn’t say I’m frustrated. I’m not,” Martin shared on locker room cleanout day. “It was tough—I came in feeling good, then got injured. That was hard, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I had the chance to get in shape, strengthen my muscles, and become more flexible. It helped me in many ways, even though it didn’t translate onto the field. And that’s okay.”

Reflecting on his time learning alongside veteran DJ Reader, Martin expressed deep appreciation.

“To be honest, I learned everything,” he admitted. “Reader taught me a better stance, how to engage a block, and how to use leverage. He taught me so much. Having him around was truly a blessing.”
