Los Angeles –
Ukrainian center Alex Len has agreed to a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, the NBA team confirmed on Tuesday, following an earlier failed trade for Mark Williams.
Len, a 31-year-old 7-footer (213 cm) entering his 12th NBA season, joined the Lakers, marking his sixth NBA team, just three days after being waived by Washington.
The Lakers had arranged a deal with the Charlotte Hornets to acquire U.S. center Williams at last week’s NBA trade deadline, but he reportedly didn’t pass a physical, leading to the trade being canceled.
This left the Lakers in need of a big man to play alongside stars Luka Doncic and LeBron James after Anthony Davis was traded to Dallas, which sent Slovenian guard Doncic to Los Angeles.
Len filled that role, having reportedly been close to a deal with the Indiana Pacers before the Lakers opportunity arose.
Len was selected fifth overall in the 2013 NBA Draft by Phoenix, where he spent five years before moving on to Atlanta, Sacramento, Toronto, and Washington. He returned to Sacramento for 3.5 years before going back to Washington in a three-team trade last week.
Len has career averages of 6.7 points and 5.3 rebounds over 680 NBA games, starting only five games in the past three seasons. He averaged 1.4 points and 1.8 rebounds per game for Sacramento this season.
The Lakers, who waived injured forward Christian Wood to make space for Len, are 32-19 and sit fourth in the Western Conference with a six-game winning streak.
