David Montgomery Discusses Lions’ Playoff Disappointment and What’s Next

Following a devastating postseason loss, the Detroit Lions and their supporters are left pondering what went wrong in their game against the Washington Commanders and what lies ahead.

Despite a remarkable 15-2 regular season record, the Lions fell short once again, sparking questions about whether the team is truly on the right path. In a recent interview with DJ Siddiqi of Forbes, Lions running back David Montgomery opened up about the team’s setbacks and their future direction.

Montgomery pointed out that the Lions didn’t underestimate their opponent, but the team simply failed to execute their style of football when it counted. “I think ultimately – I don’t think we underestimated our opponent — but I think we weren’t playing our brand of football, and it showed,” Montgomery said. “I think if we found a better way to execute, we’ll get over that hump.”

Although the Lions had a rare second chance to compete in the playoffs following their NFC Championship loss in 2022, things didn’t go as planned this time around. With some coaching changes and new obstacles, Montgomery remains optimistic that the Lions are close to becoming a championship-caliber team.

Despite the setback, Montgomery is confident about the team’s future. “A few more pieces here and there to tie everything together, but I think we’re right in the midst of being exactly where we want to be, it just hasn’t happened for us yet,” he said.

Even though some fans have begun to lose faith in the Lions’ potential, Montgomery believes the team is on the right trajectory and their Super Bowl window is still open.

Montgomery had a strong 2024 season, playing a significant role in the Lions’ offensive success with his steady rushing yards and touchdowns. As the team focuses on improving during the offseason, Montgomery’s performance will be crucial to their continued progress.
