John Morton commits to keeping the Lions offense built around Jared Goff.

New Lions offensive coordinator John Morton has no intention of straying far from what has been effective.

When Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell discussed replacing Ben Johnson, he emphasized involving Jared Goff in the hiring process to maintain the strong relationship Goff had with Johnson.

Hiring John Morton as offensive coordinator aligned with Campbell’s desire for continuity, given that Morton was on the Lions’ coaching staff in 2022. It’s reasonable to believe he wouldn’t have been chosen without Goff’s full endorsement.

There is understandable concern that a coordinator change could lead to a decline in Goff’s performance. While that remains possible, it won’t be due to Morton failing to tailor the offense to Goff, just as Johnson did.

John Morton will uphold the Lions’ offensive philosophy for Jared Goff.

Speaking with Dan Miller of Fox2, Morton addressed the benefit of avoiding uncertainties that typically come with a new coordinator.

“I think it’s big with the quarterback,” Morton said. “I kinda know him, and when I was here, I spent time in the quarterback room. I have a sense of what he likes and dislikes. That’s critical as a play caller. We’ll continue when the players return, so I’ll learn more about him and the plays he prefers.”

Morton emphasized that the Lions’ offense, like under Johnson, will be built around the quarterback. While he won’t change a system that has worked so well, leading the NFL in scoring last season, he intends to add his own touches.

“They’ve already established a philosophy here,” Morton said. “My job is to continue Dan Campbell’s vision. We’ll tweak things here and there and find ways to improve.”

Morton is stepping into an ideal situation for a new coordinator, and he appears fully aware of it.
