Montana State Bobcats bid farewell to DC Bobby Daly, who joins UTEP, while RBs coach Justin Mesa heads to the Detroit Lions

Bobby Daly, Montana State’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, is anticipated to accept the defensive coordinator position at UTEP, according to Tuesday’s report by ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

On Tuesday, the Detroit Lions revealed they have employed MSU running backs coach Justin Mesa as an offensive quality control coach.

Daly’s exit signifies that MSU will have a pair of new coordinators for the upcoming season.

Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tyler Walker departed for Temple last month, together with offensive line coach Al Johnson.

The Bobcats substituted Walker with Pete Sterbick and Johnson with Matt Smith.

MSU revealed the inclusion of Mesa  just under a month ago. He became part of the staff when Sam Mix transitioned from running backs to wide receivers coach.

Former WRs coach and special teams coordinator Justin Udy departed last month for an assistant position at Boise State. MSU elevated quality control coach Marcus Monaco to the position of special teams coordinator.

Daly, a native of Helena, earned recognition as an All-American linebacker at MSU and is a member of the Bobcat Athletics hall-of-fame.

He started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Idaho in 2013 and served as the Vandals’ LBs coach during 2017-18.

He came to the Cats in 2019 as the linebackers coach and was elevated to DC before the 2024 season. He assisted MSU in reaching the 2024 FCS championship match.

UTEP is an FBS team that participates in Conference USA. The Miners finished 3-9 in 2024, with their most recent winning season being 2021 (7-6).

State of Washington. The native of Los Angeles served as the Cougars’ transfer recruiting director in 2021, worked as an offensive quality control coach from 2022 to 2023, and acted as an assistant for special teams and tight ends coach in the previous season.
